PROGEAR 555LXT Magnetic Tension Recumbent Bike Review

PROGEAR 555LXT Magnetic Tension Recumbent Bike is definitely the right exercise machine for those who are looking for something affordable, not very complicated and offering whatever required for building fitness.

This recumbent bike has 14 levels of resistance unlike the 8 levels of resistance found commonly in the recumbent bikes. However, there is a tradeoff here in the form of not having pulse sensors. But the bike has other features that are impressive.

Features of ProGear 555LXT

Assembly

The resistance as well as drive systems are attached to the main chassis of the bike and come readily assembled. Users still have to assemble the seat, backrest and handlebars, attach base tubes to the main frame, add the console mast, connect the tension wire and lastly attach the pedals and console. All this is very simple and should take not more than 30-40 minutes.

Detailed instructions are provided by the manual and required tools are also included in the package. Users can even choose to have in-home assembly from the company for an extra fee.

Frame

The frame of the ProGear 555LXT is made of steel and is strong and durable and is designed to support users weighing up to 250 lbs. however, can support users a bit heavier than that. But users heavier than 250 lbs. should be careful because the seat locking system may not work too well if the specified weight limit is exceeded.

Step-thru Design

The frame of the bike features a step-thru design. So, normal users as well as users with disabilities can easily step in and out of the bike.

Materials

Although the frame of the ProGear 555LXT is made of steel, the protective coverings of the drive mechanism are made of strong PVC material. Steel parts are powder coated with corrosion-resistant paint. The bike comes in only one color, viz. silver.

Dimensions

The ProGear 555LXT doesn’t occupy too much space. Its length is actually significantly shorter than many other well-known recumbent bike brands. Thus, if space is an issue for a user, this can be a great exercise machine for them.

Seat

The seat and backrest of the ProGear 555LXT are extremely comfortable with a 2” cushioning. But the seat is flat and not contoured; hence some people may not find it very comfortable. This depends on one’s personal preference. If one is not finding it very comfortable, the problem can be solved by placing a cushion or towel or two on the seat.

The seat assembly is adjustable and can accommodate users of height from 5’ to 6’3”. Users taller than 6’3” too can use the bike but cannot fully stretch their legs. The seat can be adjusted by turning a knob under the slider and tighten it to secure it in place.

The backrest itself isn’t adjustable. It has a fixed angle. Since it’s attached to its bar with 4 bolts, it moves back and forth along with the seat when users adjust the seat.

Handlebars

Handlebars of the ProGear 555LXT are attached to the seat but are not adjustable though they move with the seat. Their grip has been made more comfortable by covering them with a thin rubber foam sheet. However, the handlebars don’t integrate pulse sensors like most other recumbent bikes.

Console

progear 555lxt consoleThe console of the ProGear 555LXT features a 3.5” LCD display with easily readable large digits though it’s not backlit. It tracks distance, time, speed, RPM and calories burned. It also features a SCAN function with which the values can be automatically rotated every 4 seconds, with each of them displayed on the screen for a significant amount of time. Plus, users can select the value they want to observe all the time.

The console features an odometer function too that shows the total distance covered till the present moment.

What’s more, the console even offers goal-setting for time, distance and calories. This feature gives this console an upper hand over other basic bike computers.
The operation of the console is very easy with only 3 keys, viz. MODE, SET and RESET. MODE is to be used for navigation, SET for choosing values and RESET is obviously for resetting the values. The console is powered by 2 AAA batteries that are included.

It also features an auto on/off function due to which it starts when users start pedaling or press a button and stops when the bike is inactive for 4 minutes.

Resistance

The ProGear 555LXT features a manual magnetic resistance system. A small magnetic plate is attached to the frame near the bike’s metallic flywheel. The magnetic plate is connected to the resistance knob on the console tube via a steel wire. The position of the magnetic plate can be adjusted with regard to the flywheel by turning the knob, to increase or reduce the drag.

Because the resistance system is completely manual and doesn’t integrate a servo motor, users don’t need to connect the bike to a power source. Even the console is battery-operated and has no control over the resistance.

There are 14 settings on the resistance knob. Since it’s magnetic resistance, the parts don’t come in contact with each other. The possibility of wear and tear is thus eliminated.

Drive System

The ProGear 555LXT is equipped with a belt drive system, due to which the bike operates extremely noiselessly, except a slight rattling sound of pedaling. Another advantage of the belt drive is that it doesn’t require any lubrication like a chain drive.

The pedaling motion is not jerky but very steady, thanks to the perimeter weighted flywheel. However, the flywheel doesn’t offer a very consistent momentum, though it’s not very heavy.

The ProGear 555LXT offers reverse pedaling too and while reverse pedaling, the user will still take benefit of the present resistance setting. Even the console will keep tracking speed, distance and other workout metrics.

The crankset of the bike is made of steel and is durable, while pedals are made of nylon and have adjustable straps.

Pedals

Pedals of the ProGear 555LXT are oversized and have plastic straps to secure users’ feet to prevent slipping. The straps have slits in them and the pedals have transverse knobs on a side in which the straps can be secured with the help of the slits on them. The straps should soften a bit so as to become easy to use.

Stabilizers

There are rotating plastic caps on the ends of the bases of the ProGear 555LXT serving as stabilizers.

Portability and Storage

The ProGear 555LXT is not foldable but is light enough to move to another spot after exercising. It has transport wheels at the front base stabilizer making it easily portable. Users can lift the bike with the back stabilizer bar.

Another option is to disassemble the bike, which is a pretty easy task, and store it away. This option is workable if users are not going to use the bike for a long time, e.g. while going on a vacation.
