Features of XTERRA Fitness FB350 Folding Exercise Bike
The two major parts of the frame of the Xterra FB350 come pre-assembled. The drive and resistance system also comes pre-assembled. Thus users only need to attach the base tubes, the handlebars, the seat assembly, console, and pedals. This takes around an hour. The manual provides very clear and detailed assembly instructions and all the required tools are included in the package.
The frame of the FB350 is a sturdy X-type frame made of steel tubing. It comprises of two parallel tubes with handlebars attached to their curved tops. The seat bar attaches to them from inside in their middle. The seat bar in turn has the drive and resistance elements attached to it at its bottom.
All the steel parts of the frame are coated with a corrosion-resistant powder finish. The only color available for the FB350 is light gray. The covers of the drive system are made of ABS material and their colors are gray and blue.
As mentioned in its full name, the FB350 has a folding design. The two sections of the frame can be folded together from the middle and secured in a folded or unfolded state using a pop-pin.
The bike isn’t extremely large even in an unfolded position with its base measuring 31″L x 21″W (79 x 53 cm). However, the full length of the bike from the backrest up to its handlebars’ front grips is around 40.5″ (103 cm). Thus, the minimum usage area to fit the bike in has to be 60″ x 50″ (152 x 127 cm).
When the bike is folded, it measures 21″L x 20″W x 50.5″H (53 x 51 x 128 cm). This is very convenient as the bike can be folded and stored away after exercising.
The bike when fully assembled isn’t very heavy. It weighs around 42.3″ (19.2 kg). Thus it can be moved and assembled by only one person. Once it’s assembled, it can be easily relocated with the help of the transportation wheels attached to the front base.
Maximum User Weight Capacity
The FB350 has a maximum user weight capacity is 225 lbs. (102 kg). Thus it’s designed only for seated workouts. It’s not meant for spin or standing workouts on the pedals.
The console of the Xterra FB350 features a 2” x 1” LCD display with large readable digits and it tracks workout stats like time, distance, speed, total distance, pulse, and calories. Distance is shown only in miles and speed is shown in miles per hour. It has a scan and odometer function too.
The console features only one button that can be used for all its functions. When users press the button repeatedly, they can select the desired workout metric to be shown on the display. Or they can select the Scan Mode to keep all the values rotating, each showing for four seconds. It also offers a Reset function which users can keep pressed for a few seconds to clear all the values to zero.
The console requires two AA batteries for power. Batteries are included. It starts when users press the button or start pedaling. It enters a sleep mode when the bike remains inactive for four minutes.
Seat and Backrest
The saddle of the FB350 is similar to that of the older FB150 model with an approximate width of 14″ (35 cm). It has a contoured surface for optimal comfort. It has an internal layer of foam padding and a durable top made of vinyl material with a patch of synthetic mesh on its rear side.
The seat is 2-way (up and down) adjustable. Its post has 7 adjustment notches. Thus it can accommodate users from 4’10” (147 cm) to 5’10” (178 cm).
The backrest is another upgrade over the older FB150 model. It’s attached to a strong, dual bracket. Although it’s not very large, it has thick foam padding and thus provides great lumbar support. It folds over the seat when the user folds the bike for storage. Given the fact that most upright bikes don’t feature a backrest, the backrest of the Xterra FB350 is a unique feature.
The front handlebars of the bike are non-adjustable. They are directly attached to the front of the main frame with two bolts. Their sides are covered by a layer of rubber foam material to provide a secure and comfortable grip. They provide the possibility to adopt many types of grips, such as close grip, front grip, or parallel grip.
The bike also comes with two extra handlebars, each attached on either side of the seat. This is also an upgrade over the older model. Users can conveniently hold them to get extra support and safety.
Both handlebars are lightly padded for a comfortable and firm grip.
Pulse Rate Monitoring
The side grips of the front handlebars are equipped with metallic pulse sensors. When users hold them while pedaling, the console can track and display their pulse rate.
The FB350 being an exercise bike with a light capacity doesn’t have a very heavy flywheel. The flywheel weighs around 3.3 lbs. (1.5 kg) and has a balanced design so as to offer a smooth pedaling motion.
Reverse pedaling is also offered; however, the resistance will remain constant in reverse pedaling.
The drivetrain uses a V-belt. Thus the pedaling action is totally quiet. It even doesn’t need lubrication as a chain drive does.
The 3-piece crank-set has strong steel arms and weighted pedals with a metallic core and non-slip durable ABS surface. They have adjustable straps to keep users’ feet secured.
Though the crank-set is quite durable, standing up on pedals is not recommended as it may cause internal wear and tear and also the position will be awkward due to the frame design and user may lose balance.
The Q-factor (gap between the pedals) of the bike is fairly narrow. So, users’ feet are positioned on the pedals very naturally and no additional lateral stress is put on the knees and ankles during pedaling as put on by the bikes with a wider Q-factor.
The Xterra FB350 is equipped with a mechanical resistance system. Thus it doesn’t need any external power source. So, the console has no role in adjusting resistance.
The resistance system of the bike comprises of a small magnetic brake connected to the dial at the top of the front part of the frame via a steel wire. Users can turn the dial clockwise to move the brake closer to the flywheel causing increased pedaling difficulty and counterclockwise to move the brake far from the flywheel to cause reduced pedaling difficulty.
There are 8 levels of resistance. The first one is very light and is meant for warm-up and recovery training, whereas the 8th level provides considerably increased tension, creating a possibility for reaching a higher heart rate in a short duration of time.
One more upgrade the FB350 has over the older FB150 is an accessory pocket. This is the only add-on the bike has.
The Xterra FB350 doesn’t require much maintenance. Users only have to keep checking if there are any loose parts and bolts and tighten if there are any. The internal parts too don’t need any lubrication or other maintenance for a very long period of time. Another maintenance task may be wiping the bike with a damp cloth to keep it clean and make it look good.
