Optimum Nutrition Instantized BCAA Powder is commonly used before and after workouts and during periods of low-calorie diets.

When consumed before workouts, they prevent muscle breakdown and when consumed after workouts, they help with recovery and regeneration.

During periods of low-calorie dieting, 5g of BCAA once a day cannot do wonders to spare muscles, but it can be helpful. However, Optimum Nutrition Instantized BCAA Powder and all other similar supplements should be taken as part of a well organized, balanced nutrition plan.

For people having recumbent bikes and similar cardio equipment at home, BCAA drink before a workout can be very beneficial if the workout is followed by a whey protein shake (according to the daily nutrition plan and nutrients intake) and balanced first solid meal 60-90 minutes after whey protein shake.

If you don't like protein shakes, consume a serving of your BCAA right after the workout, and have a normal meal according to your daily schedule.

Personally, I prefer Unflavored ON BCAA and add it to my post-workout whey protein shake and sometimes to my daily shakes and smoothies in order to increase my daily BCAA intake, especially during the periods of dieting.

Also, when I am NOT on a diet, I tend to increase my whey protein content in my post-workout whey protein shakes and during the day, instead of drinking powders, I eat normal food :)

But, if the workouts are really hard, even when not on a diet, I add a serving of BCAA into the post-workout shake, just in case.
